Learning Spaces

Distinctive spaces for diverse artistic endeavors

At the Dana School of Music, you’ll have access to distinct learning spaces for all your academic and artistic activities. You’ll find large ensemble and chamber music rehearsal rooms, a highly specialized computer lab with the latest multimedia software, practice rooms of varying sizes equipped with Steinway studio or grand pianos, and more.

For most music majors, Bliss Hall becomes a second home, and you’ll find it an ideal place to study, practice, and collaborate with other students. The building is close to many other campus facilities, including campus dining, residence halls, Maag Library, the university hub—Kilcawley Center, and is a five-minute walk to downtown Youngstown for many unique dining experiences and performance opportunities.

All-Steinway School

The Dana School of Music is the first public and one of only eight All-Steinway music schools in Ohio, featuring 92 Steinway instruments JOE – is this correct?. Our exclusive practice facilities offer Steinway grand pianos reserved for piano majors and minors. The pianos are housed in classrooms, practice rooms, and faculty studios throughout Bliss Hall.

In addition to the Steinway pianos in studios, concert halls, and specific practice rooms, Dana’s clavichord, harpsichord, and several pipe organs give students exposure to historical performance practice (JOE how much of this is still true?). Two keyboard labs consisting of 27 Yamaha electronic pianos for learning fundamental keyboard skills and our Electronic Music Technology Lab consisting of DAW music software programs and an assortment of Novation LaunchKey 25 and 49 MKII and M-Audio Oxygen 49 MK IV keyboard controllers provide students an array of practicing tools and resources for music-making. (JOE - ?!?)
